I think that would depend on your areas climate and the local market for ice cream. Here in New York City, I recently saw a Dairy Queen open up in November… and haven't seen a single customer inside. On the other hand, the popular ice cream shop around here always closes down for the winter, and the first day they open up in the spring has started to turn into a big event. It used to be just word-of-mouth ("oh, Ralph's is open, did you know that?"), but now it's heralded in the local newspaper and on Facebook Live. And somebody really ought to put up a webcam to monitor the length of the line.

So figure out when "ice cream season" starts in earnest in your area, and open a bit earlier than that: long enough to get some publicity and hand out some free samples.
